Before Kennedy, candidacy was rarely announced more than 6 months prior to the election. But by announcing his intent to run nearly a year in advance Kennedy was able to gain enough popularity and momentum through his extended campaign to take the presidency in the closest race prior to Bush v Gore. In the 50 years since, candidates have attempted the same strategy, pushing the start of election season earlier and earlier as the earliest announcer forces the hand of other potential candidates.
