Did Hitler's government ever go into any detail on plans to get back the former colonial possessions of the German Empire?
My general belief is that he wouldn't have cared for them back and it would have been impractical. However one of the prevailing reasons for war was to right the wrongs of the Treaty of Versailles and return to Germany their rightful territory. Although the German Empire's territory in Africa and the Pacific were anything but ancestral German territory, it was still land that was removed from German control at the end of the War. As I said, I really don't expect much but if someone knows anything on the subject I would be appreciative. Thanks!
In Hitler's Empire Mark Mazower posits that it was indeed an imperial mindset which drove the conquests of the Third Reich. He notes the disorganized nature of the occupations. That indeed ruling these conquests relied, in part, on the collaboration of certain groups in the conquered states in a similar way that the European empires relied on collaborators. Furthermore, German bureaucrats and military officials in those states enriched themselves at the expense of the local peoples, again, in a similar way to the colonies of European powers.
This doesn't answer your question regarding former colonies of Germany, but it does speak to the imperialistic nature of the Germany envisioned (perhaps) and created by Hitler.
