They hoped to stop reforms and modernization and preserve Confucian ideology and traditional forms of government, which is why they're called anti-reformists. Simply put, they believed Chinese culture to be superior to Western culture in every way and feared change because that would be an implication of Western superiority. These conservatives were extremely xenophobic and racist, and a large number of them supported the Boxer movement to drive the "Western barbarians" out of China.
