You may be referring to this - The M35 Italian Tankers helmet. Whilst not the most protective of equipment, it was both protective and popular among the tank crews. The leather skirt at the rear of the helmet prevented any dirt or debris from hitting the back of the tankers neck and prevented any unnecessary injury. It was a pretty popular helmet for the Italian Army, and remained in service for a couple of decades following the war.
