Traffic accidents in the pre-automobile era

by jm0508

A paper on the history of plant taxonomy notes that a famous botanist of the 17th century (Joseph Pitton de Tournefort) died in a 'serious traffic accident' in Paris in 1708. This struck me as...unexpected?

Does anyone know how common traffic accidents were in the pre-automobile era?
