Although he pushes his continuity thesis a bit too far, Engineering War and Peace in Modern Japan, 1868–1964 by Takashi Nishiyama has some good materials on the aviation industry. The United States Strategic Bombing Survey (USSBS) devoted an entire volume to the Japanese aviation industry with trenchant observations on the failures of the Japanese in the late war. The USSBS also produced various corporation reports that examined the overall trajectory of specific firms over the course of the war or on specialized topics like the underground production of Japanese aircraft. One of the peculiarities of Japanese aviation while the atypical quadrilateral between industry, the two services, and the central government's Planning Board ed to both a proliferation of aircraft types and producers, the Japanese delegated aero-engine production to two firms, Nakajima and Mitsubishi, that had a monopoly of sorts on engines in the industry.
