Aren't there similar ceremonies throughout Oceania?
Kia Ora
Depending which tribe your from and what type of ceremony it was used for would determine what type of Haka be used. One can communicate with spirits with both chanting/prayer and physical movements, each movement having a different meaning. It was used as a Battle Cry not only for bravado, but also similar to how the samurai would shout their ancestors names to the enemies before battle. It was very important for Maori to know their whakapapa ( genealogy). Back then it was normal for Maori to know their genealogy going back over 40 generations , even today some Maori can trace their lineage back to the first Waka (Canoe) that arrived in Aotearoa (NZ).
