Two really good introductions come from the Oxford History of the United States series: Robert Middlekauf's A Glorious Revolution, which focuses on the Revolutionary era and Gordon Wood's Empire of Liberty, which goes through the War of 1812. You might also find some good books in the AskHistorians booklist located in the sidebar.

In terms of Revolutionary Era Black history i'd recommend James Sidbury's Becoming African in America: Race and Nation in the Early Black Atlantic, Michael Gomez' Exchanging our Country Marks: The Transformation of African Identities in the Colonial and Antebellum South, and Freedom's Prophet: Bishop Richard Allen, the AME Church, and the Black Founding Fathers by Richard Newman. All three give a solid introduction to early Black history, identity, and community building.

For revolutionary period I really like Founding Brothers by Ellis. There is an audio lecture series that goes with it that I really like as well. Really great stuff and very readable. I'm currently reading his book The Quartet about the first constitutional convention.
