Why did Quebec want to become its own nation-state?

by DatAssparagus

Hi guys! I'm reading up on nationalism and Quebec was brought up - specifically the 1995 referendum that was reject.

My question is why did they want to separate from Canada then and since I can't really get up and go there right now, if that sentiment still is carried on today?

Hi OP. This sub does not permit discussion of current affairs - especially politics! - so could you please remove the following from your post text:

and since I can't really get up and go there right now, if that sentiment still is carried on today? Are they a nation themselves currently and are just being held hostage by Canada? :(

By the way, you can go over and ask Quebecers if you want - check out /r/Canada, /r/Canadapolitics, /r/Quebec, /r/PolitiqueQuebec
