I am tasked with putting on a dining in Dinner for my command and the celebration is VE Day. As we are in the US Navy the focus will be on our contributions to the victory in Europe. I am looking for the major points that were accomplished to allow a victory in Europe... more than we just dropped some soldiers off at the beach (which was a major one!).
Additionally we are tasked to put on a fun skit so any suggestions to focus on would be much appreciated.
Thanks in Advance!
The Navy was a major contributor to the Battle of the Atlantic, aiding the hard pressed Royal Navy to shepherd convoys across the Atlantic.
In fact FDR had ordered the USN to escort merchant ships and fire on U-Boats, in fact the USS Reuben James was torpedoed and sunk about a month before Pearl Harbor. While later in the war, small escort carriers helped close the gap in the middle of the Atlantic where U-Boats had previously been safe from air attack.
The USN also helped escort convoys North to Russia, the Arctic Convoys around the top of Scandinavia were a major source of Aid to Russia and also a dangerous job as Germany based major air force, sub, and surface forces in Norway to stop them.
As for some potential humorous events that might work for skits, 2 come to mind that might work.
In the Spring of 1942 the USS Wasp was operating with the British Grand Fleet. She was requested to help with the Siege of Malta, the British were having problems getting more planes to the island. So twice she loaded RAF Spitfires, sailed into range of the island through the gauntlet of Italian and German attacks. Afterwards Churchill remarked to the extent of "Who said a Wasp couldn't sting twice".
Alternatively after D-Day as the allied forces closed on Cherbourg and its valuable force one of the few battleship gunnery duels of the war occurred. The Texas, Arkansas, and Nevada engaged a heavy shore battery for a few hours, with shells from the shore landing routinely around the US ships and hitting several times, at one point a 9in shell landed in the stateroom of a Warrant Officer, but incredibly enough failed to explode and was a dud!
