Apologies to Andrew Jackson

by lb8ovn

So Andrew Jackson is one of my favorite characters in history. Old Hickory is my kind of crazy, a little bit violent, a little bit drunk, but has a big heart and a ton of love for both his country and his wife Rachel.

Here's the thing, every time I go to a party I hear someone hating on the dude. Which is interesting to me because I think people are just using him as a straw man to bash on old dead white guys without seeing context.

Can you perhaps give me some context to explain the Trail of Tears and slave ownership? Obviously, from a 21st century perspective, both were abhorrent. But that's my point. It's OBVIOUS to us, but maybe not him of his countrymen. What are some subtle facts maybe not commonly known that would provide context for these two glaring stains on AJ's legacy?

This thread has a lot about Jackson and modern interpretations.
