It developed gradually over the 1960s. Film crews (or rather the number of crew members who demanded an onscreen credit) grew over time, expanding along with film budgets. This made the amount of time audiences had to watch credits before the movie grow longer as well. Eventually they started shifting the credits to the end, a trend that started with European films. By the 1970s, the practice was firmly established in Hollywood.
