Working on research project on the Confederacy, and a number of letters and newspapers from the time criticize the Emancipation Proclamation for inspiring slave insurrection. Citing the Haitian Revolution, Confederates across the board seem to be scared shitless about a slave insurrection, and they make frequent reference to massacres in Haiti. Are they correctly categorizing the level of violence in the Haitian Revolution?
I'm commenting in part because I'd like to know the answer- please let me know if my contribution is unwelcome here and I'll remove it!
I'm also commenting because I came across this video the other day (link below) about the revolution- and it was a reminder to question everything. It was also very informative, although I know little about the revolution. From what the speaker said, there were massacres however (though not as racialised as he suggests that the historiography states?).
This isn't a particularly informed comment, so please let me know if it should be removed. The video clip isn't too long however, and I do recommend it!
