The most dangerous part for the survivors of the initial sinking was exposure. Water pulls heat from the body very quickly and the Atlantic is cold to begin with. That represents a few minutes of survival. Having another ship around probably wont clothe and feed all the survivors until they make land, but they'll be able to get people out of the water and sheltered from the weather until enough ships can get together to do the job.
