Even before the Titanic left on its maiden voyage, the major rival of the White Star Line had ordered three ships that were larger than the Titanic. The Hamburg American Line ordered three progressively larger ocean liners in 1910, 1911 and 1912. All three were much larger than the Titanic and all three exceeded 50,000 gross rated tons. When the Imperator, the first of these three HAPAG ships made its maiden voyage, they stressed the large search light on the bridge, to detect icebergs, and the fact that it carried enough lifeboats for everybody on board.
After World War I, HAPAG was forced to turn over all three of their large ocean liners. Imperator became the Cunard liner Berengaria, the Vaterland became the United States Line's Leviathan, and the third ship, which never entered service for HAPAG, was completed for the White Star Line in 1921 as their RMS Majestic.
