I will spend my holiday in Étretat, France, and I'd like to read about the greater Normandy region and what it was like during the chaotic events following D-Day - maybe even visit some places of interest. Peeking at the wiki book recommendations, I don't see anything particular to that subject, so I'd welcome any insight.
For a look at the battles of D-Day, I'd recommend Antony Beevor's book on the subject aptly titled D-Day, the Battle for Normandy. It's well-balanced and focuses on all aspects of the battle, although I think most attention is given to the British role. The Max Hastings book mentioned in the wiki might interest you too. Hastings is a good pop history writer and is very readable, though I'd caution he can be a little fanboyish and forgiving towards the German Army and far too harsh on the Allies.
Even better, I'd recommend Mary Lou Robert's recent book D-Day Through French Eyes: Memoirs of Normandy 1944. It is a collection of memories of D-Day by French civilians who lived through it. The impact of this massive invasion on civilians on whose homes it occurred has been surprisingly ignored by many historians.
Also, just having been there myself, I recommend seeing Omaha Beach and Point du Hoc, obviously, but also Port-en-Bessin, which British commandos stormed on June 6 (It's also in the movie The Longest Day, during the awesome scene where the Free French commandos take the German-fortified casino) , and Bayeux, where you can see the tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings during the Norman invasion of England. Pegasus Bridge is also an obvious must-see.
You should get hold of Normandy-related titles in the Battlefield Europe series, which provide a concise yet detailed, soldiers' eyes view of the battles, with matched wartime and contemporary photos. The books also contain a guide for travellers. There are separate titles for the D-Day beaches, as well as most of the major operations of the pre-breakout phase.
