How willing are you to read Archaeological texts?

For Ethiopia, David Phillipson's foundations of an African civilization is good., though it can be challenging reading, and his is a strongly archaeological look.

For a broader, more introductory look at the wrote continent, Roland Oliver's medieval Africa is quite good.

I don't have a good recommendation for pre-colonial Kenya outside of the swahili coast, sorry.
