Okay, so I know that Vulgar Latin was spoken by probably everyone and Classical Latin was written by the small educated class, but how did for example if rules or news was to be spread all around the empire, how did the soldiers or whoever administered it communicate with the peasants? Sorry if this comes off as stupid or obvious but if "Vulgar Latin" wasn't standardized and most likely varied from place to place and if only Classical Latin was used for writing, how did those people potentially memorize all the rules, grammar structure, vocab, etc of the Latin they were speaking? How did they talk to each other and understand each other each time if the very language they spoke was not set in stone, apparently rarely written down and varied in each part due to the native tongues of the people messing up the language, etc?
EDIT: Considering how apparently some texts/graffiti have apparently found, is it possible that some people did know how to write something akin to it but it was just never standardized and made official like it is today?
Yeah somehow many past soceities have functioned despite the lack of education which put the lower classes at a disadvantage, especially with reading. To my understanding Classical Latin was used for announcements or news type thigs, because as the highest form of Latin and the form spoken by the upperclass and Royalty, t was the preferred. Also many of the people who spoke Vulgar Latin could not actually read or write so I don't think it was ever recorded in written form. However, the need for written form is not needed to estabilish language and yes there probably were many variations of Vulgar Latin BUT there are also many variations of language even today, for example modern Britain has different regions with different colloquialisms and dialects that simply are not used outside of that place. Also it is possible to understand a language very similair but different to your own, i knew someone who was Swiss German but could understand German as many of tbe words were similair or the same. You don't need rules to communicate a language if you are working as a shopkeeper for example, you just need some form of comprehensive communication. The ability to speak more than one languae was also far more common and less remarkable than today.
