They adopted cats when European colonists brought them. The wild felines of North America were never suitable for domestication, being that all of them with the sole exception of the ocelot are quite large and dangerous. Smaller cat species are socially and genetically much more suited to domestication. The ocelot, being much smaller and human-friendly, was likely tamed (but not domesticated!) numerous times in many places. We can't tell how people felt about them from the archaeological record, but they were present in a number of societies across Mexico and Central/South America.
