I've noticed that when it comes to the conquests of the Mongols, Berbers, and Ottoman Empire, there seems to be a stop west of the Aegean sea. I've heard that sicily and Italy has been invaded a few times, and Russia is questionably European so WW2, but I can't think of any ancient or modern superpower sacking France or England that wasn't bordering those countries. Is there a reason why for this?
Most of Spain fell under Arab rule between the eighth and fifteenth centuries. It was known as Al-Andalus which is where the name of the southern Spanish province of Andalucia comes from. Spain was steadily re-conquered by Christian forces over several centuries in a process called the Reconquista which was concluded in 1492.
This is why European Spanish has so many throaty "h" sounds, it's influence from Arabic.
