If the weather was not condusive to working or drying, laundry was done indoors. Racks or string were placed in the space where laundry was done for drying. Before other heat sources such as coal stoves, a fire would have been going constantly for warmth, food, and hot water for cleaning. While spaces heated solely by a fireplace are not always the warmest, they do tend to be dry.
