The first restaurants in europe happened in France following the revolution. Many personal cooks were jobless following the nobility losing wealth and power. Within this climate they chose to establish places where peasants can eat like kings for a day. Restaurants didn't really hit it off across Europe until the industrial revolution happened and more people flocked to the cities.
