He was a corporal in WW1 with little formal education and no professional experience. Next thing you know he's leading the Nazis in the beer hall putsch. I know the Nazis were a fringe party in the beginning but there seems to be a "gap" in his resume somewhere? I'm curious how he was able to go from a corporal to a position of leadership?
So Hitler won an award in the war for bravery. Afterwards he was sent to investigate a small obscure party, their ideals appealed to him and he joined the party as member number 55 (they put a 5 in front to make it seem like they had more members). He gained a lot of support in 1923 because of hyperinflation in Germany wherein money became pretty much worthless. Poverty, riots and other problems were prominent and so people looked to radicalists to solve their problems. Hitler was one such radicalist.
However, his support soon dwindled when Gustav Stresseman created the Dawes plan which repaired the economy by reinventing it. This was basically by creating a new currency and borrowing money from the USA and then by improving relations with France through the locarno (friendship) pact. This lasted between 1924-1929. During this time Hitler was pretty much forgotten about but he still raved about how Germany shouldn't tie her economy to that of another country. Then in October 1929 the US stock market crashed and the great depression began. The US demanded that Germany repay the money they borrowed immediately. Out of fear of a return to the problems of 1923 many turned to radicalist and because Hitler had "predicted" this he was many peoples first choice. Historians have argued this two ways:
"Hyperinflation was the scar that never healed" (Snyder). Suggesting that they only turned to Hitler because they didn't want to face such extreme poverty again.
"It was the great depression that put the wind in Hitlers sails" (AJP Taylor) suggesting that without this event he could never have risen to power.
However, the problems of 1923 cannot be under stated as they were very extreme, actually, I would argue the most extreme case of hyperinflation in all of human history.
Other factors, such as his theories of social darwinism (i.e Untermention and Ubermention wherein Germans are superior to all others and the rest are sub human). This was because it gave people a scapegoat to balme for the problems.
The treaty of Versailles and Weakness of the Weimar which he used to his advantage by promising to rip up the much hated treaty and by promoting the "backstabbing" myth.
Finally, in 1932 Hitler led the largest party in Germany but was denied power by President Hindenberg who disliked Hitler calling him a "Bohemian Corporal". In his final election Hitlers support dwindled as there was an upturn in the worldwide economy (something he would later take credit for) and so less need for radicalism. Anyway, what took place was a series of political deals known to history as backstairs political intrigue wherein Von Pappen and Paul Von Hindenerg (the presidents son) convinced the president to hire Hitler claiming that they could control him. After he was hired in January 1933 Hitler used article 48 of the Reich constitution to pass laws without hinderence. Later that year the president died and Hitler effectively became the leader.
This is a very short and simple version of the events that took place and if you'd like I can easily go into more detail.
