I have previously not come accross this thesis, is it a speculation from your side or are there any historians argueing for this? Generelly it is believed that the first World War was to a large extent a nationalistic war, combined with imperialistic ambitions and some other factors. Uniting Europe was at least not the outspoken intention of the warring nation. Germany, for example, expressed their will to fight for their own country's sake, not for the sake of Europe.
