I have reviewed the book list and could not find anything directly related so I thought I would ask if anyone had any recommendations for a book on the greco persian wars. I am looking for something informative but also not super dry. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The best book on this is and will always be Herodotus' Histories. It is our only surviving narrative account, written just two generations after the events, and while Herodotus can be accused of many things, dry he is not. Good translations are widely available; you can pick up De Sélincourt's Penguin Classics translation anywhere for a few bucks.
There are tons of modern accounts on the Persian Wars, and new ones are constantly coming out. Although it's getting old, I would particularly recommend J.F. Lazenby's The Defence of Greece, 490-479 BC (1993). He is mostly balanced and critical, and tries to include the Persian perspective on the events as much as he can.
On that note, the most interesting recent account of the wars is G.L. Cawkwell's The Greek Wars: The Failure of Persia (2005). Aware of the dearth of Persian sources, Cawkwell nevertheless tried his best to tell the story from the Persian side, offering radical new interpretations of our received Hellenocentric tales of the conflict.
