In most cases, the vicitims were either discredeted as stasi spies or being shown as sexual promiscuous (for example by spreading retouched photos showing them nude with strangers in a context that implies sexual activity).

In other cases, victims were imprisoned, isolated and told their social circle had abandoned them. Edda Schönherz and Mario Röllig speak about this method being used against them.

If juveniles were victims of Zersetzung, the stasi often prevented them from starting a career - for example, by ensuring that they were blocked from the area they wanted to work in and then forcefully assigned to an area they loathed. Others were prevented from a good school education, allowing them to learn only the bare necessities.
