Just a curiosity I had. I read that they were used ever since the crusades and even before that by some other populations, is this true? Do we know anything about their use?
Not war drums but O'Neill's march is a war pipes tune from medieval Ireland. Various pipe tunes may have been used to issue commands to the army.
