Nassau : The infamous Pirate haven on New Providence island that had some of history's most famous Pirates visit it, such as Blackbeard, Vane, Rackham, Bonny, Hornigold, and Read, etc. Nassau's history is always centered in the years between 1715 - 22 (as that I know). But was Nassau like before it was the "Nassau" that we heard of? What was it like before 1715? Like, the earlier 1710's or late 1700's (as in 00's, like 1705 for example).
Was it a getaway for Pirates before 1715? What wars in the Caribbean was it involved with (if any)?
You might be interested in my article: Strongest Man Carries the Day. While the concentration is on 1715-1718, it covers Nassau from 1703 to 1715 as well. Before the pirates took over, Nassau was in bad shape. The Spanish and French burned the place up in 1703. From then on, and until Rogers came in 1718, there was no official Governor in the colony and there was very little authority from the British government. Only a few hundred people lived in the greater Bahamas. The French and Spanish raided the Bahamas on many occasions during the period before the pirates started taking over.
