One of my greatest questions about the situation of the Berlin wal isl why would people try to jump over a wall made to be impossible to jump over instead of driving a few hours west and crossing in one of the least dangerous zones?
Another way to put this question is, what kind of provisions did Eastern Germany make to make sure people were not crossing the border throughout its entire frontier with Western Germany?
The border fortifications were not just around West-Berlin but also between the two German states. The Berlin wall was just one comparably small part of that.
Keep in mind that West Berlin was surrounded by East Germany. The border for East and West Germany was still about 100 miles away. The Berlin wall did not separate East and West Germany.
