I never got a good grasp of it in university. I'm looking for something that isn't too heavy, but is still informative and well organized. Any suggestions?
One decent survey is Kenneth Morgan's Oxford History of Britain. It's come out in multiple editions, including lots of paperbacks, and is cheap as well as readable.
