It appears popular because of the failure of Google's automatic digitization program to read older books. Every single one of those (search WTF alone, scroll down and you'll be able to look in the books google is searching to see what it's reading as "WTF") is just nonsense scrambled letters. The older the book, the more challenged Google is, it appears.
