It depends on the tribal culture they came from, how recently they had been enslaved (first generation transportee or born into slavery), and where they actually were enslaved and the conditions they were subjected to.

The Igbo people were valued highly for their skills as farmers, but managed to make their tribe less attractive because so many of them did in fact commit suicide after being purchased. There was significant variation in tribal cultures, and indeed in tribal religions, which included various animist traditions, Islam, and Christianity.
