What kind of research and preparation went into the supply/logistics of Shackleton's run to the South Pole - and how did it fail?

I've always been very interested in the logistical side of Arctic/Antarctic exploration, but I'm having trouble finding sources on how food/technology/etc was developed for the run. I'm particularly interested in the failings of said logistics.

I should say I've read "South," but I'm more interested in HOW certain foods/equipment/etc were chosen, and why certain mistakes were made. What was the state of polar survival research at the time? What previous traditions/cultures/etc were being drawn upon?
