Our modern western view of Greek religion is heavily influenced by two thousand years of Christian thought. We now find it difficult to imagine a system of beliefs as radically different from doctrinal monotheism as that of the Greeks. Their belief system did not constitute a "religion" in the modern sense. It did not have doctrine or scripture. It was simply a collection of superficially shared but locally varied cults, traditions and practices. It was inclusive - the same gods were worshipped in different ways and for different reasons across the Greek world - so it could not possibly have a canon. The Greeks did not conceive of their gods as the "true" gods or of their beliefs as a "true faith" in competition with the beliefs of others.
