I looked through the reading recommendation page and couldn't find anything other than on reference piece on the Viking Age.
I've read The Far Traveler and read a fair amount of historical fiction, primarily Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories. But I'm looking for more recommendations like The Far Traveler. Unfortunately, I kind of feel overwhelmed glancing through amazon's library, and I'm not sure which are good choices.
Could anyone recommend one or two books about the Viking Age that don't portray it as some fantastical land, but give a real, historical look?
You're going to want the sagas. Pick up a collection of them (I recommend the Penguin Classics The Sagas of the Icelanders) and you'll have a pretty good idea of a 13th or 14th century interpretation of 10th and 11th century Iceland and Norway. Try and avoid older editions, as the original translators and editors sometimes made very...poetic additions to the sagas, while newer editors stick much more closely to the original texts.
My personal favourite sagas are Egils saga, Sverris saga, and the Bosa saga (though I warn you, that one's mostly just a bunch of dick jokes and PG-13 smut)
The Long Ships is what you are looking for. It is a fantastic book.
