To clarify: I've found plenty of things like "common first names in the US during x decade", but the furthest back I could find in the US census site appeared to be the 1990s. (The site navigation is unintuitive to me.)

While I'd prefer the stats for Massachusetts alone, in a pinch I'd take common last names in the 30s for the entire US; I'm just being optimistic that someone has better resource-finding-mojo than I apparently do.
