I'm reading the Wiki page on the Rommel Myth, and I'm seeing how Rommel was a central hero in German war propaganda, and was even practically celebrated by the Anglo-American press. Why, then, was Rommel not sent to command against Germany's most dangerous enemy in the Soviet Union, which had been gaining considerable ground even before Rommel was implicated in the plot to kill Hitler?
Was the value of his mythology too great to risk tarnishing on the Eastern Front, where the fight was far more difficult?

I have a follow-up question based on some research I did long ago in undergrad. Rommel was implicated -- not entirely fairly -- in conspiracies against Hitler. There were rumors long before the government did anything about it.
My question is -- if that is all correct -- did that affect the decision about where to send him? I seem to remember he was fairly close to Berlin at the end of the war, I suppose to "keep him close."
World War Two questions about Nazi Germany tend to bring out enormous numbers of graduates from the Hearts of Iron school of military strategy on a fairly regular basis, but this thread has bottomed out even my expectations by combining the usual fare with discussion of Erwin Rommel, the mention of whom seems to summon enormous amounts of incredibly low quality commentary.
