I can't answer that, but there were some who went in the opposite direction. As soon as he became the new Earl of Warwick in 1893, the former Lord Brooke (Francis Greville) had the old water-powered grain mill in Warwick Castle turned into an electrical generating plant, and not long thereafter threw a sensational party, attended by various upper-class twits, fops, and toffs, lit only by electric light. (The party, that is. The upper-class twits themselves were presumably lit by old-fashioned Scotch and gin.)

Much of the equipment is still in place and you can see the plant while touring the castle today. Under the raised floor there is a massive storage-battery system. When the system was running it required a couple of staff members to constantly monitor and adjust it, according to the information posted in the plant.
