Because lincoln took it personally and that it would make the country weaker and lose money. The south left after Lincoln's election, not a single southern state voted for him but he won. The south saw this as they had no more political power left, and seceded. There are multiple reasons why though. Also remember that the south wasnt in poverty, they might have been less industrialized but not in poverty
