Essentially they were chased back into Mongolia during the red turban rebellion and the foundation of the Ming dynasty.

Today we call them they Northern Yuan or the post-imperial mongols. The Genghsids (people from Genghis' line or his brothers) still considered themselves dominant from other tribes because they held the Imperial Seal of the Yuan Dynasty and had the prestige of the Genghisid bloodline. However they were often warring with other Genghisids Princes for dominance and weak rulers were often figureheads for non-Genghisid rulers. At other times they were outright subjects to stronger tribes.

Dayan Khan who reunited Genghisid tribes in the late 1400s was a descendant of Kublai and it was his descendants who lost the Seal when they unsuccessfully attacked the Qing dynasty in the early 1600s and were subsequently absorbed in the Qing empire.
