The Old West showdown is a derivate of the classic duel, which were used to settle disputes "honorably" without the law intervening. Many Duels were fought in the United States. An example of a classic Wild West duel would be the death of James Hickok in 1876 in Deadwood South Dakota, who died in a pistol duel with a gambler.
