Context: My (german) Grandma told me of her early childhood in Bessarabia, where her family had a small cloth/textile factory. A very short (and probably wrong) summary of what she told me:
Her family were living in Bessarabia (at the time part of Romania I believe) together with other families of german ethnicity, also called "Bessarabiendeutsche"
Germany adopted a "Heim ins Reich" (Back Home to the empire) policy. In her words "Hitler came and told us we had to go back to the fatherland. It was portrayed as our patriotic duty."
After more or less forcefully relocating into Germany, she and her family hat to spend about 2 years in what she called a "Eindeutschungslager" (which could be translated to "Germanification camp") under bad conditions. To clarify she said it wasn't inhumane and life threatening like the concentration camps but it wasn't desirable either. She wasn't exactly sure how long the family had to stay there, that's why I wrote "about 2 years".
After that they migrated to Baltic coast, Mecklenburg to be specific, where the locals weren't exactly thrilled about the new arrivals. As she said, Bessarabiendeutsche were generally looked at with distrust.
Since she was very young at the time I wanted to ask how much of what she told me could be considered as truth. And also as the title says, what were the political reasons for the german state to do what it did?
Edit: I just wanted to add a small detail I just remembered. She said that the "Eindeutschungslager" was located in Bavaria near Munich, I believe.
Despite the common perception that Nazism is hyper-nationalist, it makes more sense to think of it as "racialist" in the sense that all ethnic Germans were seen as part of the Aryan race and therefore destined to inherit the earth, regardless of where these people lived, how long, or how they perceived their national identity.
Simultaneously Hitler believed of course in Lebensraum or "living space" for the Aryan people, namely in Eastern Europe. So the plan was to bring all German peoples into the German nation, assimilate them, and then once Eastern Europe, particularly Poland, the Baltic States, Russia, and particularly Ukraine had been conquered and "liquidated" of all Slavic people, the Aryan people would be settled there particularly to farm the land.
Of course the Nazis didn't really wait until all of the Slavs had been killed before resettling people to these places, making the whole issue of resettling the Germans after the war a whole other issue.
