I was wondering this myself just recently. Rhodesia had a Unilateral Declaration of Independance, and before that, been self-governing for four decades. In 1922, 27 oct, Southern Rhodesia, operating under the British South African Company, was given a vote to join the South African Union, or remain with the BSAC. The referendum resulted in a majority against merging the Union.
