His farm is supposedly in Merida, Spain and here is a pic of his wife. She does not look like I what would imagine typical a Celtiberian would. Is this historically accurate or a misrepresentation of Spain coming from a modern post-North African invasion perspective?
Follow up. What other errors are there in Gladiator? I think I've caught two. 1) In the opening battle the Romans march haphazardly to meet the Germans. Should t they be marching shoulder to shoulder? 2) After the battle Maximus shouts "Roma victor" but I believe that's bad grammar and he should shout "Roma victrix," since Roma is feminine and would need the feminine version of victor.
I also have a question concerning gladiator. In the movie they called the black gladiator "numidian". I thought numidians were all berbers. Is this just a mistake or were there also black numidians?
A question to tack on: Was gene-flow from North Africa actually higher during the Islamic-era than previous eras?
Because during the Roman-era, Spain and North Africa were part of the same empire.
1 -The population of the iberian peninsula was the same before and after the "north african" invasion (really weird to read that) or before the roman or cathaginean conquest.
2 - The "north african" admixture that so many foreigners care so much about is like 4% and was there before the MUSLIM invasion.
3 - Merida was not celtiberian but lusitanian. They spoke a indoeuropean language but not celtic. Scolars speak of a preceltic language.
4 - She could pass as a native iberian in the V BC or today
