I recently was watching an episode of the TV series Vikings. In it they took some mushrooms which seemed to have pyschedelic effects. I was wondering whether this was really the case, and if so what were their purpose - purely for pleasure, or religious? And what were attitudes towards them from other Christians?
I asked a similar question back in 2014 and /u/wee_little_puppetman answered my question PM however I pasted it into a thread which you can read here.
The gist of the answer was that it is thought by many that berserker warriors used mushrooms before going into battle however this is thought to be fictitious. Other recreational drugs are discussed in the answer as well (e.g. Possible cannabis use in Gokstad, Norway). Alcohol was also used by the Norse much like today in social situations.
