My friend recently purchased this rubbing. I cannot understand the letters with any certainty and I have no idea where it is from originally. Does anyone know what this typeface is called, or what the inscription says? Blurry overall image but clear inscription in link below. Thanks!
The typeface would be a blackletter or formalized gothic script.
It reads:
Gloria fama scolis laus artes cetera mundi vana nimis valeant, spes michi sola Ihesus. Suscipe Walterum bone Iesu in fine dierum, qui obiit anno Domini millesimo quingentesimo etc.
Translated:
Glory, the fame of [his] students, praise, art, [and] the rest of the world should come to naught; you alone, Jesus, are my hope. Good Jesus, receive Walter at the end of days, who died in the one thousand five hundreth, etc., year of the Lord
The final symbol (I've given it as 'etc') is throwing me for a loop. The description of the tomb here suggests vicesimo - 20th - but I have no idea how they came to that conclusion.
