John Marshall was the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court and the Secretary of State at the same time. Were there any contemporary concerns expressed about this arrangement?
On a related note, I've heard that executives were expected to have a judicial approach to governing in early America, or at least that executives and judges were expected to be similar in outlook. Are either of these true?
