Where did using hydrogen peroxide as a mouth rinse begin? Was this adopted during a war for soldiers to use for dental hygiene?

Looks like mouthwash didn't take off till the 1970's.

However: The first use of hydrogen peroxide in dentistry was in 1913, used to decrease plaque formation and to control "pyorrhea" or gum disease.
