Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified Japan. His death caused Japan to take a step back into chaos, but the all decisive battle at Sekigahara and Tokugawa's political wrangling stopped that and forced everyone back to peace. That's what happened. Whether or not it's inevitable is conjecture.
