Mentuhotep II was the fifth Pharaoh of Dynasty XI. His father, Mentuhotep was Pharaoh for fifty years, so Mentuhotep II was relatively elderly when he came to power. Mentuhotep II continued the policy of his Dynasty XI predecessors. He remained defensive on the northern frontiers, but continued to expand Egypt, south of the first cataract. The best documented of these expeditions was recorded in a long inscription in Wadi Hammamat. In year eight of Mentuhotep II, his steward, Henenu, led a force of three thousand soldiers on a long and well planned excursion into what is now the Sudan.
Unlike his father, whose great monument at Deir el-Bahari is still substantially intact, very little remains of Mentuhotep II mortuary complex. This contributes to the limited amount of information about this Pharaoh.
